File System Tweaks - Change the Location of System and Special Folders

Windows keeps a number of special folders such as "My Documents", "Desktop", "Favorites" and the "Start Menu". These folders can be moved anywhere on you system and the new location updated in this key.

  1. Open the Registry Editor click on the Start button on your taskbar, then click on Run and type "regedit" and click on OK to start the regedit utility.
     
  2. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ (see picture 1).

  3. Note the current location of the folder you want to move, and then using explorer move the folder to the new location.
     
  4. Edit the value in the key below for the folder you moved to reflect the new directory location.
     
  5. The modifications you made will be in effect after you reboot your PC.
